Last june I found myself heading to Vail, Colorado for the GoPro Mountain Games 2016. I wasn’t the one in my team attending but had a last minute change.
Dude, I love my job. I always wanted to get to the Rocky Mountains in the US. I could live there, in a wood cabin with my Harley….
There I got to know this little charming town called Vail that is a sky station on winter. In the middle of the Summer, GoPro and Vail Foundation holds the event. It is the lasrgest celebration of mountain sports and lifestyle.
It summs more than 2,000 athletes of 25 different sports in professiona and amatour categories and 60,000 spectators. The little city is packed and glowing with people from all over the world.
X-country and road cycling, freestyle, 8-Ball (this is fun as f***), sprint and extreme kayaking, raft cross, World Cup Climbing, stand up paddle sprint and surf cross, trail, mud and road running, dog comps, slackline, wall climbing and the Ultimate Mountain Challenge.
The games also have a photography competition, film festival, an interactive exhibition and demo area, live music, and mountain lifestyle parties.
2017’s edition will happen for the 16th year, from June 8-11. Summer 2017 sporting events include steep, freestyle, sprint and full contact kayaking, rafting, mountain, road, freeride and slopestyle biking, World Cup Bouldering, amateur climbing, fly fishing, sprint and cross stand up paddling, slackline and trail, mud and long distance running……
I almost had an heart attack when I wen bike riding uphill throught fireroads in the mountain due to my early year shank injury, altitude and all. But the way down was super fun! I also kyaked for the first time in my life and boy, what a cold water in that river!
And we held a Bowling championship between GoPro agencies and staff.
Which I won! (Yaaayyy!) I got a bowling pin as a trophy – it is still in my desk.
Check it out! Totally recomend you guys to get there next summer! And take your GoPro with you!
